You have a GOOD day whenever you make someone smile. Happy Inspecting! |
More about the Editor, InspectorBob
To be a successful inspector requires continuous learning, from everywhere and from everyone well beyond the Home Inspection course you took in the beginning. Most of these courses I've taught and reviewed only break the surface of the knowledge you must acquire. You must be willing to always have an open mind, eyes and ears.
My name is Robert Johnson and I go by Bob. I am not going to write my resume, I am going to write about the education and educational opportunities I have experienced as a Home Inspector.
Numerous professional Home Inspectors organizations and states have continuing education requirements. These classes are great but the real learning begins with observations and listening.
I recently read a book, "Teaching a Teacher" by James David Schlude. The book is about his life experiences as a teacher learning from life's lessons. I found the book entertaining, but mostly the book made me think about all the learning I received from other inspectors, both old and new, about how they saw things and wrote about the things they saw.
As an inspector for over 25-years and an American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) Report Compliance Verifier for over 5-years I have met a lot of inspectors and read hundreds of Inspection reports from inspectors in all 50-states. I have learned from all, from the amateur inspector to the veteran, information, some good and some bad as to how to conduct an inspection and most importantly write a report. I have learned from the classes I have taught, by the questions asked, from the ride-alone getting a feel for the business, and other inspectors at meeting and conferences during general conversations. I would take a few hours during family vacations and go walk through new home construction around the country.
This article has 2-purposes, one to thank all those I have learned from and to inform my readers of who I am, in hopes my readers can learn from what I share with on this website.
